International issues

You probably take for granted the right to access this website, to meet and discuss work problems or politics. But trade unionists in many other countries risk intimidation and even death for active membership in a union. Solidarity - joining together with others who share a common interest - is the very basis of trade unionism, and it shouldn't stop at national borders.

Britain's economy and political system are interdependent with Europe and the rest of the world. It is vital, therefore, that UNISON works with sister trade unions in other countries and through key international organisations to promote and protect its members' interests and concerns.

Dignity. Period!

“It’s immoral for the leadership to deny us our biological rights” Thabitha Khumalo speaks exclusively to UNISON.

In the UK women buy more than three billion disposable sanitary products every year. It’s something we take for granted. But millions of women in Zimbabwe go without these basic products. As a result many are suffering from infections, depression and, in some serious cases, infertility. As Robert Mugabe’s leadership plunges Zimbabwe deeper into crisis – basic goods like sanitary products are a luxury item only available to the rich.

Thabitha Khumalo from the Zimbabwean Congress of Trade Unions told conference she is angry about the lack of sanitary wear for women, which she says not only threatens women’s health but also their dignity. “Ordinary women cannot afford sanitary wear. We are inserting old pieces of cloth or newspapers, but the ink from the newspaper is causing infections.” It’s immoral for the leadership to deny us our biological rights.” she say’s. To buy sanitary products, Zimbabwean women would have to spend half their monthly income.
Thabitha Khumalo has been arrested more than 22 times, suffered rape, torture, and had her front teeth knocked out for speaking out against Mugabe’s government and the plight of women in Zimbabwe.
