About UNISON
UNISON members are people working in the public
services, for private contractors providing public services and
the essential utilities. They include manual and white collar staff
working full or part time in local authorities, the NHS, colleges
and schools, the electricity, gas and water industries, transport
and the voluntary sector.
The main role of a union is to support people in times of difficulty
at work and as branch we pride ourselves in the support we provide
to members through disciplinaries, grievances and sickness. We also
help members in times of difficulty outside of work through our
work with UNISON Welfare. However, being
a member of UNISON is not just about help in times of crisis, we
also provide a wide range of services to members - from car insurance
to mortgages. The UNISON Holiday Club also offers great deals to
members see our Membership services
page.
We have a large number of representatives across a range of sites,
to contact your local rep please see our contacts
list.
How UNISON works
Every member of UNISON belongs to a local branch which is made
up of people working for the same employer.
Local stewards are there to represent you at work and help find
the answers to your problems. They are volunteers and play a vital
role in recruiting new members and organising your branch. If you
have a problem, talk to your local steward. If they can't handle
the problem on their own, they can talk to other branch officers
or full - time union experts on your behalf.
Anyone can face problems at work sometimes but if you are a member
of UNISON, you don't have to face them alone. We can provide advice
or representation on things like pay, rotas, leave and sickness
procedures. We are also there to help you make sure your workplace
is healthy and safe, support you in case of disciplinary action,
dismissals or redundancy.

Heres four good reasons why UNISON is right for
you:
No one works harder
UNISON won more than £35million
in injury settlement payouts for its members last year, has
fought many high-profile equal pay claims around the country,
and is a major influence on government policy such as the
minimum wage, health care, policing and pensions.
Women represented
UNISON's membership is two-thirds women
- so we make sure their voices are heard throughout the union.
At every level of the union, women are elected in fair proportion
to their membership.
A voice for everyone
UNISON makes sure everyone has a say in
how the union is run, from branch member to general secretary.
Our unique structure ensures top-quality help and advice is
available at local, regional and national level.
Bigger and better
UNISON is not only the countrys
biggest trade union, its one of the fastest growing
too. Last year UNISON recruited 148,755 new members, a staggering
407 per day. This is another step along the road to building
an organising union of two million members.
